The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents “Moods of California,”an exhibition that showcases various regions of California, each with distinctive flora, fauna and climate. The exhibition includes scenes of the Arroyo Seco, San Diego County, Monterey, the Central Valley, the Mojave Desert, Yosemite Valley and other picturesque parts of California.

Plein Air Painting Donated to Irvine Museum Collection

Jeff Sewell, an award-winning contemporary plein air painter, recently donated one of his pieces to the Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine. The painting, Catalina Twilight, is 48” by 72” and features a majestic view of the sunset over Santa Catalina Island as seen from Crystal Cove near Laguna Beach. The painting was recently displayed at the Dusk till Dawn exhibition.

The Irvine Museum Collection boasts one of the most extensive collections of California contemporary plein air paintings. Catalina Twilight takes its place among the definitive works by such art luminaries as Jesse Powell, John Cosby, Jim McVicker, Bryan Mark Taylor, Gregory Hull, Rick Delanty, and Dennis Doheny.

Sewell is a signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA) and serves as its Director of Education and Mentorship. Through a partnership with the Irvine Museum Collection, he has helped launch the Plain Air Project, a program designed to inspire excitement for the visual arts. So far, more than 700 local students have participated.

The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents “Dusk till Dawn,”an exhibition that goes against the grain of what we typically think of as landscape painting. Usually, an artist will paint a beautiful landscape bursting in bright sunlight with colorful trees and flowers, things one would expect to see during the day. This exhibition is different as the paintings on display show those same subjects but at night or at the outer edges of the day, when the sun is setting or when it is rising.

The exhibit is on display from May 27 – September 28, 2017

The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents “Along El Camino Real,” an exhibit that explores the history of the California missions. These outposts were connected by El Camino Real
(the Royal Road or the King’s Highway), which today approximates Highway 101.
