Andrew Weathers presents a live musical performance that complements and riffs on his audio piece Orange County (Landscape Hocket), made for the exhibition Habitat: Making the California Environment, on view now at UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art's Irvine location. The commission is assembled from field recordings recently made at the site depicted in Curtis Chamberlin’s painting The Old Coast Road (Arch Beach Road) (after 1917), also on view in Habitat. Weathers will use the timing of local ocean tides to inform a live saxophone accompaniment to his recorded materials.
This free program is open to all, but seating is limited, so advance registration is required. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
About the artist
Andrew Weathers (b. 1988) is a composer, improviser, and intermedia artist based in the Front Range region of Colorado. His work is concerned with the disjunction of duration and place, as well as improvisation as a vessel of discovery and collective practice. His projects and performances span field recording, prepared guitar, surrealist soundscape, and minimalist composition rooted in repetition and drone. Apart from his longtime commitment to collaboration alongside a wide swath of figures inhabiting the sonic underground, Weathers was also the founder and operator of Full Spectrum Records. Founded in his home state of North Carolina in 2008, the label released the works of sundry sound artists and experimental musicians, eventually moving its operations to the Llano Estacado region of northwestern Texas before reaching a conscious conclusion in 2024. On top of frequent credits as a mixing and mastering engineer, Weathers has also produced various projects for Other Minds Records and Rural Situationism.
