FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Did UCI acquire The Irvine Museum? Expand

In 2016, The Irvine Museum generously donated a collection of plein air and California Impressionist art to UC Irvine in advance of the university building a new museum and institute focused on California art. After this donation, The Irvine Museum no longer had a need for its physical gallery space on Von Karman Avenue. Until a new museum building is constructed on campus, UCI Langson Institute and Museum of California Art (Langson IMCA) operates out of this space.

In 2017, UC Irvine was gifted The Buck Collection from the trust of Gerald Buck. This collection focuses primarily on Post-War contemporary art. Together, The Irvine Museum Collection and The Buck Collection form the heart of Langson IMCA. Langson IMCA is also actively acquiring new artworks to augment these collections and will continue to do so in the future.

In 2019, Langson IMCA renovated the space on Von Karman Avenue in order to properly care for the artworks on view, create a studio for educational activities, and provide expanded wall space for exhibiting art.
