Susan M. Anderson | A Southland Bohemia: Idah Meacham Strobridge and the Arroyo Seco Art Colony, 1880 – 1920
REGISTRATION IS FULL. Please email imca@uci.edu to be added to the waitlist.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Bohemian of the Arroyo Seco: Idah Meacham Strobridge.
Guest curator Susan M. Anderson discusses the countercultural community that arose in the Arroyo Seco area of Los Angeles during the first decade of the twentieth century within the context of the American Arts and Crafts movement. The Arroyo Seco sustained a community of artists, writers, and artisans that celebrated camaraderie, and enthusiasm for la vie bohème (the bohemian life) as a means of resisting industrialization and the dehumanization that accompanied it. Idah Meacham Strobridge and other bohemians translated their lifestyles into art and literature, becoming cultural entrepreneurs.
Following the talk, Anderson will be available in the gallery to answer questions and talk with visitors and program attendees.
