Kim Kanatani has been appointed the inaugural director of the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art (UCI IMCA) at the University of California, Irvine. Kanatani comes to the UCI IMCA from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she has served as deputy director and director of education. The university only established the museum—which serves as the home of collector Gerald Buck’s holdings of more than 3,200 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper—in 2017.

Nationally known museum educator and scholar Kim Kanatani will join UC Irvine in August as the first director of the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art.

The center will focus on the study, research and exhibition of the work of California artists from the early 19th century to the present.

Upon a Painted Ocean: An Ode to the California Coast Interviews

The Irvine Museum Collection at the University of California, Irvine presents “Upon a Painted Ocean: An Ode to the California Coast.” Our tribute to the California Coast is entitled Upon a Painted Ocean, in reference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem about the sea, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, published in 1798. The exhibition includes scenes of the Santa Catalina Island, Coronado Beach, the rocky cliffs of Big Sur, views of San Francisco Bay, and two historic vistas of Crystal Cove, one of which shows the cove as a movie set, used as such since the early 1920s.

The exhibit is on display from November 10, 2018  – March 30, 2019.

Artist Glimpse and Book Launch: First Glimpse
